I have called for Fifers to be at the heart of Scotland’s growing renewables sector.
Speaking in the Scottish Parliament yesterday during the cities strategy debate, I focused on the opportunities and challenges Fife has being part of two of Scotland’s main city regions: Dundee and Edinburgh.
I said that although people were coming to live in Fife, they often work elsewhere and that Fife could have a “jobs bonanza” in renewables – particularly in offshore energy.
Fife has huge potential as a renewable energy hub and many companies are looking to invest in the area. This means we must ensure we have the right infrastructure in place.
Fife and particularly areas like west Dunfermline have suffered from town planning decisions that have not always had community benefit in mind and from people living in the area, but working and spending elsewhere.
There is much we need to do to ensure that Fife really benefits from growth not just in our main cities but in regional investment and Scotland’s renewables future is an important part of that.
I’m calling for Fife to be a key renewable energy hub and for local people to benefit from the jobs this will create. Large numbers working and living in an area like Fife will not only help to secure the local economy, but will enrich the local community for generations to come.
